Introducing Learners to Number Sense

Module Description

We have so many learners who do not look forward to the maths lesson because they just cannot seem to master maths concepts. This then causes anxiety and frustration which makes them unable or unwilling to learn Maths. Global data indicates that 60% of grade 4 learners are already behind in Maths. This is a very concerning statistic. How can we ensure that the majority of our learners master maths? Number sense is the answer. Learners lacking number sense fall further and further behind their peers in all areas of mathematics. How then can teachers overcome this large hurdle? If we can get learners to master maths facts and make connections with numbers, we can then get most of our learners to fall in love with Mathematics. In this module, teachers will be able to plan and implement teaching and learning strategies to foster learner development of number sense by planning activities that foster practice.
