Teachers need to monitor what students know and can do to make decisions about how to deepen their understanding or remediate any misunderstanding. This module supports teachers with steps to collect student data in the moment to make those decisions.
Over-the-shoulder monitoring encourages teachers to physically monitor student work by circulating throughout the classroom and reviewing student work, typically by looking at the work over students’ shoulders. This practice empowers teachers to identify key ideas and potential misunderstandings that learners may have, closely monitor student practice or work and determine what students have and have not mastered throughout the lesson.
