Introduction to Balanced Literacy

Module Description

Early grades teachers using a balanced literacy approach benefit students by offering a comprehensive and adaptable strategy for literacy development. This approach combines various methods, including phonics, vocabulary building, and comprehension skills, enabling teachers to address individual student needs effectively. It promotes a love of reading and writing by creating an engaging and immersive learning environment, fostering independent, proficient readers and writers. By nurturing critical thinking and communication skills, balanced literacy equips students with the tools they need for lifelong learning and success in an increasingly complex world.  

Module Objectives

Teachers will be able to support learners during classroom practice activities; demonstrate an understanding of the critical skills of phonetic understanding to improve reading fluency; and apply the balanced literacy approach.
